The Newmarket Business Association is one of 17 business associations around Auckland City which is largely funded by local commercial ratepayers. The association is not only focused on making Newmarket the premier commercial and retailing precinct in New Zealand, it wants to be a leader in what it does. Without doubt over the past four years it has become the highest profile business association in the country. It describes itself as an advocate, marketer, lobbyist, communicator, and conduit between business, the community and local authorities.

Cameron Brewer

For three years Cameron ran his own small business ‘Inside Otago’ - a community newspaper he founded and published. After selling the Dunedin-based business in 1998, he moved to Wellington where he worked as a writer in the previous National Government’s parliamentary research unit. He then worked for two years in the political office of former Prime Minister Rt Hon Dame Jenny Shipley. Cameron has also been a press secretary to Auckland City Mayor Hon John Banks and Act leader Rodney Hide. The Massey University history and sociology graduate grew up on a sheep farm near Hawera in South Taranaki. In 2001 he left Wellington for Auckland to work in corporate communications. He has been Chief Executive of the Newmarket Business Association since May 2005. Cameron believes his experiences in local and central government, his background in communications, and his stint as a tertiary student president, have all been good training for his current role.

Lea Worth

Lea joined the Newmarket Business Association in September 2006. She brings to the role an extensive career in retail marketing covering 12 years. Lea held a number of senior positions during that time including being Westfield’s national events and promotions manager for four years. In this role she was involved in a number of key strategic decisions including the launch of the Westfield brand in New Zealand. Lea was instrumental in implementation of Westfield’s successful ’Shop For Your School’ campaign which involved securing major sponsor Apple, whose support has been ongoing. As well as being responsible for promoting nine of Westfield’s shopping centres nationally, Lea has significant experience in event management, including organising high-profile VIP cocktail parties and leasing launches. Lea’s passion for retail, her many contacts, and her strategic marketing experience bring a strong marketing focus to Newmarket.

Di’s involvement with the Newmarket Business Association began in 1995, when she was approached by Newmarket fashion retailer Diane Stephenson. Di had sold her successful hairdressing salon which employed 32 people and was planning retirement. However the challenge and opportunity to work with a precinct that was heavily fashion focused was irresistible. Her passion for fashion started at the age of 14 when she was a teenage model in school holiday fashion parades at department stores Milne & Choyce and John Courts. This led to bigger and brighter fashion shows such as the nationwide tour of the Gown of the Year. Between modelling jobs, she was employed by leading Auckland hair and beauty salon Kays. Di continues to coordinate and compere fashion shows for many of Auckland’s charities. She has judged Miss New Zealand competitions and has played a leading hand in the Auckland Racing Club’s Fashions in the Field.

Bernadine Paterson

Administration Manager/PA

Bernadine Paterson has been Administration Manager/PA since July 2009.  She has come to the Association with over 14 years Administration experience.  Most recently, she was Operations Manager for New Zealand’s leading Corporate and Wedding Florist.  While directly reporting to the GM she also works alongside the Marketing Manager and Membership Manager on a daily basis. Bernadine also works closely with the Treasurer on the accounts and their ongoing preparation ahead of board meetings. She manages the membership database and along with the Marketing Manager updates the website. Bernadine is the first point of contact for callers into the office or on the telephone. She manages the boardroom and flyer bookings with members. Bernadine is also responsible for a lot of the in-house creative work, such as creating invitations, AGM booklets, nametags, the strategic plan, and the monthly task of laying out the membership newsletter. Bernadine also organises the board meetings and takes minutes when required.
